Shake Whatcha Momma Gave You!

For a few days out of every year South Florida gets more exotic. Fort Lauderdale becomes flush with lovely ladies, each glittering from their skin-adhered jewels. They drape themselves in colorful scarves and throw you a little wink, hip flip as you check out next to them at Publix. That’s how you know: Spirit of the Tribes is back.

The four-day long event (War Memorial Auditorium, 800 NE 8th St., Fort Lauderdale) is part workshop, part shopping spree, and part performance. By bringing in the best teachers from around the world, specializing in styles as diverse as Bollywood and salsa and gothic pop lock, Spirit has become the most popular fusion bellydance workshop on the East Coast. Start your day off right with some morning undulations at the Sensual Zumba class ($10), or just be a spectator at tonight’s big troupe performance ($35 at the door). Whatever your style or agility level, you’ll find something perfectly suited for you (ahem, shopping?) during Spirit of the Tribes. Check out the full schedule; it’s on the registration form at There are five classes today, and 21 total through the extended weekend affair.

KEEP NEW TIMES BROWARD-PALM BEACH FREE... Since we started New Times Broward-Palm Beach, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of South Florida, and we'd like to keep it that way. With local media under siege, it's more important than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" program, allowing us to keep offering readers access to our incisive coverage of local news, food and culture with no paywalls.
