Show Your Poker Face and Save a Greyhound

Been the envy of all your poker buddies lately? Is Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler" more of a mantra for you than merely a catchy '70s country tune? Perhaps it's time to up the ante and put all that hold 'em and fold 'em know-how to the test. Mardi Gras Casino on Friday is holding a Texas Hold-em Poker tournament. There will be a $2,000 grand prize for the victor and a not-too-shabby $500 second-place prize for the other top five finishers. The $100 advance registration buy-in ($125 at the door) comes with an all-you-can-eat prime rib and fish and chips buffet dinner, which sure beats those stale tortilla chips and expired nacho cheese served at your pal's game. There is a also a slot-machine tournament available for those not drawn to the deck. The best part about this tournament is that its proceeds go toward a good cause: All money raised benefits Friends of Greyhounds, a nonprofit organization dedicated to finding good homes for retired racing greyhounds. Registration and dinner starts at 6 p.m., and the playing begins at 7:45 p.m. Mardi Gras Casino is located at 831 N. Federal Highway in Hallandale Beach.
