Who could keep the progenitor of space-time theory engaged past the appetizer? If you moved the meeting to a bar and you happened to be Pablo Picasso, you might manage it.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile, a play by Steve Martin, is that scenario precisely. The characters discuss metaphysics and women while peons loiter around, including a Frenchman with a cantankerous prostate and a conceited inventor named Schmendiman. Elvis also cameos.

The Il Nomo Ensemble Theatre troupe is performing it threadbare: there will be no set and little movement, just a clutch of actors reading from scripts on music stands. The format has precedent: the original production was a read-through at Steve Martin’s house, with Tom Hanks as Einstein. Tickets cost $4 or $6. It starts 8 p.m. at the CMAA Therapeutic Recreation Complex (2728 Lake Worth Rd., Lake Worth). Call 561-352-6505.
