Let’s pretend we’ve learned Beauty and the Beast’s valuable life lesson: that beauty is only skin deep, despite our culture’s obsession with glorifying good looks above all else. That nugget of knowledge gained doesn’t excuse the most disturbing part of the B & B story, which coincidentally doesn’t involve vanity at all. In the early versions, after Beauty’s father gorges himself on the Beast’s food and wine, he takes advantage of his host’s hospitality by stealing a rose from his garden. Here’s the kicker: Instead of owning up to his thieving ways, the father decides to do the noble thing and offer his daughter to the hideous Man-Beast in lieu of being imprisoned himself! Bravo, good sir! Thank goodness the Showtime Dance & Performing Arts Theatre is basing its show on Disney’s version. They’ll employ children of all ages to turn the cuteness factor up to 11 as they perform each Saturday through January 19th at Showtime Family Theater (503 SE Mizner Blvd., Ste. 73, Boca Raton). Tickets start at $10. Visit www.showtimeboca.com, or call 561-394-2626.
Saturdays. Starts: Jan. 5. Continues through Jan. 19, 2008
