SUN 8/3

Hey, kids! Wanna beat the heat? Wanna get all artistic and whatnot? Take a break from doodling those dragons and wizards on your notebook during summer algebra class and head over to the Norton Museum of Art (1451 S. Olive Ave., West Palm Beach) for its "Sunday at Norton" event. Every week, the museum offers a class to introduce kids to a different work of art. This week, the theme is "Mythical Characters and Creatures." That's right, all you aspiring Dungeons & Dragons illustrators can get a crash course in inking the fantastical and imaginative. Draw the perfect three-headed snake! Learn how to make a woodland fairy look menacing or impish! Perfect an evil wizard! Illustrate a mythical battle between an enchanting unicorn and a powerful centaur! Heck, get really crazy and draw yourself into a board from EverQuest, where you slay Quarm, the guardian of Zebuxoruk and discover the Plane of Know--, uh, or just impress friends with your new knowledge of otherworldly beasts. It sure beats hanging out at the mall, and there's no 20-sided dice required. Families can browse the permanent collection, then enjoy the studio activity in the Reynolds Art Education Room at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free with paid museum admission: $8 for adults, $3 for ages 13-21, free for children 13 and younger. Call 561-832-5196, ext. 1133. -- Audra Schroeder

WED 8/6

Play Day

What's the David Deal?

Lest we forget David Deal, who dedicated more than 30 years to teaching Broward County youth, the city passes along his memory with its annual "David Deal Play Day," which celebrates its 50th anniversary at Osswald Park (2220 NW 21st Ave., Fort Lauderdale). The day begins at 8:30 a.m. with a long list of sports: track and field, basketball, tennis, fitness, golf putting, and sillier entries such as grease-pole climbing and the "wacky confidence course." For those less enthused about sports, a teen concert kicks off at 4 p.m. featuring Jackie O, Po-folk, and Strawberry and headlined by Trina. Yes, that Trina. As this is a children's event, we have a feeling she won't perform "Nasty Bitch," "No Panties," or, well, pretty much anything off her first album. Much to our dismay. Admission is free. Call 954-828-4759. -- Dan Sweeney
