“This song is about seeing my ex-girlfriend with another dude in the produce section of Wal-Mart and ducking behind the cantaloupes so she wouldn’t see me. But then she saw me anyway. It’s called ‘Feelin’ Like a Melon.’ ” See, at an open-mic night, you never know what you’re going to get: a funny song that’s sad, a sad song that’s funny, a comedian that’s funny but only accidentally, or maybe even a gem or two. But the probability of discovering a gem at the Funky Buddha Lounge’s weekly open-mic night is slightly higher than at other open mics around town: One need only walk through the door to see why the Funky Budd-ha has such a great reputation that stellar artists from the area fight to get on the list. The atmosphere is intoxicating, and creativity is in the air; delicious beers flow from the tap, and heady smoke swirls from the hookahs. Patrons chill on couches as artists offer up their souls from the beautiful wooden stage. Artist signup begins at 8 p.m. and performances begin at 8:30 at the Funky Buddha Lounge (2621 N. Federal Highway, Boca Raton). Entrance requires a $3 donation to charity and the purchase of two items. Call 561-368-4643, or visit thefunkybuddha.com.
Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Sept. 12. Continues through April 2, 2010
