Spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic disease that affects the nerves controlling voluntary muscle movement, is the number-one killer of children under age 2. And families of children with SMA are driving in the fast lane to find a cure for this horrible disease. You can feel the need for speed too by attending the second-annual Gala of Hope at Ferrari Maserati of Fort Lauderdale. Join “Families of SMA” at a cocktail reception on Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. Meet celebrities like Super Bowl champ Plaxico Burress from the New York Giants; Kavita Channe, reporter for Fox Sports/Prep Zone; and renowned artist Gary Longordo. Enjoy an open bar, heavy hors d’oeuvres, and complimentary cigars. Each gala attendee will also receive a voucher admitting two guests to any South Florida Improv Comedy Club.
