The Real Fourth Meal

Society at large generally recognizes three designated meals per day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner – each categorized by the time in which they take place and the type of food ingested. Granted, there are exceptions (eggs for dinner, cold pizza for breakfast), but we think these rigid gastronomic definitions demand that a fourth meal be added to the equation: happy hour! Yep, happy hour: that two-hour window before dinner where liquid ingestion of the alcoholic variety contains as many vital, brain-powering nutrients as any regular ol’ meal, and then some (we swear by it, and look at us!).

Take, for example, at Happy Hour at the Grape (706 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). On Wednesdays and Fridays from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., the chic wine bistro offers its signature wine flights – that’s half-sized servings of three perfectly paired glasses of red or white – for just $4 to $7 per glass. Go with the pre-selected flight of the day or hand pick your own selections. Either way you’ll not only be expanding your wine lexicon but filling your belly too. Also to that effect: the Grape puts out lovely platters of red pepper hummus, gourmet cheeses with pita chips and toasts, sweet tomato bruschetta, and mounds of salty olives to compliment the wine. Suddenly, dinner seems so obsolete. Call 954-467-2433.
