The Scars He Carried

Don’t let the title Wild Sunflowers fool you into thinking this is a movie about two star-crossed lovers frolicking and giggling in a meadow — you’d be really wrong. Because this story chronicles Bobby Hatcher, a soldier who has returned home from Iraq with battle scars both physical (a wound from an improvised explosive device) and mental (post traumatic stress disorder). He’s from a poor farming community, and the veterans’ system isn’t supporting him and his family the way this family needs. The war has left Bobby incapable of maintaining a job, and a pain pill addiction grows. Molly, his wife, is left to work and raise their children on her own. The flick helps show us — people with not-so-literal battle scars — the possible aftereffects of a soldiers’ lives when they return home. The war’s not over yet. This film’s one stop is Sunday night at 8 at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale). Tickets cost $9 and less. Call 954-525-3456, or visit fliff.com.
