They Say You Can’t Fight City Hall…

When plans by Susan Stanton (formerly Steve Stanton) to undergo gender reassignment surgery were leaked to the press, she was shocked at the backlash. In addition to being removed from her position as City Manager of Largo Florida, local message boards lit up with inflammatory, hateful comments. But those experiences have made her stronger and wiser; they have also turned her into an impressive resource for people wishing to understand the gravity of issues facing the transgender community on a daily basis -- from work place discrimination and dealing with interpersonal relationships to locating fair housing and healthcare. The obstacles are high and resources are scarce. She will be leading an open discussion/lecture about these issues and more tonight at 7 p.m. at the GLCC (1717 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale) during a Town Hall event aptly titled “Equality for All.” Also speaking will be Blue, a transgender youth activist. This open-to-the-community event is co-sponsored by 12 local equality activist groups, including heavy-hitters Lambda Legal and HRC (Human Rights Campaign), so when you attend, you’re sure to make some new friends.
