Three Minutes of Fame

In a world of Facebook, Skype, and text-messaging, old technology fades and new innovations emerge before you can say XBox. We write e-mails instead of letters, our exchanges as impermanent as the technology we use. (Except for, say, that unfortunate picture of you from Mardi Gras -- it was one time! -- that just won't quit circling the web.) So, in the interest of remembering the seemingly obsolete use of film, the One Take Super 8 Film Festival will celebrate that seemingly ancient tool, the super 8 camera, while giving local filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their work and the rest of us a chance to see what's being created in our community. Each film is three minutes long, and none have been viewed before the screening. No edits, no second chances -- just the audience and unadulterated rolls of film. The Super 8 Festival, which started in Canada in 2000 and spread to various cities throughout North America, will land in Fort Lauderdale Friday at our preeminent DIY venue The Bubble (810 N.E. 4th Ave., Fort Lauderdale). Founder Alex Rogalski will give a lecture on the history of the festival before the screening. All Luddites should arrive around 7 p.m. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission costs $5.
Fri., Dec. 11, 7 p.m., 2009
