Trafficking in Full View

Theatergoers looking for a night of lightweight entertainment are best advised to pass on the Parker Playhouse's upcoming production of Hidden and opt instead for any of the dozens of musicals South Florida theaters offer on an ongoing basis. But while Hidden isn't exactly an easy watch, it is timely, compelling, captivating, and challenging theater at its best. It focuses on human trafficking, a malady that's reached epidemic levels on the nation's southern border and here in South Florida, where smuggling people for profit is an all-too-common criminal outrage. The play finds Alana, a former victim of human trafficking, attempting to put her past behind her by relocating to a new city and starting a new career at a prestigious law firm. Unfortunately, she's thrown into the spotlight when she's assigned a high-profile case involving a politician's daughter. Ironically, her client and her best friend share her shadowy past, compounding Alana's efforts to try to keep their secrets safe. When she learns that their traffickers are living nearby, her challenge takes an even greater sense of urgency. Hidden will be presented at 6 p.m. Saturday at Parker Playhouse, 707 NE Eighth St., Fort Lauderdale. Tickets cost $12.71- to $19.49. Call 954-462-0222.
