Tribal Solstice

For all of the modern products and procedures aimed at making the section of a woman's body between the breast and hip bone shrink, harden, or just disappear from view altogether, there is an equally powerful alternative dance movement working to reclaim the belly region as a visible source of immense power, strength, and seduction. Entering its eighth year, the Tribal Solstice Bellydancing Festival returns to Fort Lauderdale for a weekend of workshops, performances, and celebrations aimed at the art of belly dance. While belly dance has been around for centuries, American Tribal style is somewhat newer by comparison, with markers like a gothic tone, tattooed dancers, and improv-style dance moves. The weekend includes workshops with fun titles like "Crack the Whip," "The Art of Disconnect," "Jill's Drills and Juicy Combos," and "Shimmy Through and Through." You'll learn from some of the most sought-after performers in the business, like Mira Beatz, Jill Parker, Kami Liddle, and Olivia Kissel. Workshops cost $60 and $140, with package pricing available. All workshops will be held at the Hampton Inn at 250 N. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. If you can't make the workshops but still want to see some of the hip-shake action, head to a special gala show at Cinema Paradiso (503 SE Sixth St., Fort Lauderdale) Saturday at 8 p.m. Full details are available at tribalsoltice.com.
