Turkey Treats

How much do you really know about Turkey? (The country, not the bird.) You’ve probably heard about the Trojan Wars, that the country is an archaeological goldmine, that it was the site of the Ottoman Empire, and, well, that belly dancers are sexy. But what about the food? The culture? Fashion? At a time when the United States is waging war in the Middle East, familiarity with a country like Turkey, which merges the customs of the West with those of the East, is important because of its uniquely secular and modern yet traditional character. As part of its “Around the World in 80 Nights” series, which has included Bangladesh and will cover Guatemala in February, Cinema Paradiso will present films and cuisine to raise awareness about the country and raise money for the Florida Turkish American Association’s cultural activities. The film 40 and the reception are free, but if you’d like a taste of Turkey, food and beverage prices will vary. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; showtime is at 7:30. Call 954-760-9898, or visit fliff.com.
