Two Jews Walk Into a Theater

“As a Jew, you have to pick something on the menu… and alter it beyond all recognition.” That’s one of the not-so-Talmudic teachings handed down in Jewtopia, which became the longest-running comedy in off-Broadway history in 2007. Now, the show is coming to the Coral Springs Center for the Arts (2855 Coral Springs Dr., Coral Springs) in a new, modified format, World of Jewtopia, starring the creators themselves, who combine standup and PowerPoint presentations (for instance, a slide anatomizing their grandmother’s freezer) with live scenes. Written by Bryan Fogel and Sam Wolfson, the play’s about a Gentile, Chris O’Connell, and a Jew, Adam Lipschitz, who are angling for Jewish and Gentile women, respectively. O’Connell says he needs a Jewish woman because he never wants to make another decision in his life. The two men train each other on wooing women. In the process, all the stereotypes are gleefully trotted out and skewered. The production is headed for Broadway in 2010, so here’s a chance to catch it on its way. World of Jewtopia runs today and tomorrow at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $42.40 to $50.88. Call 954-344-5990, or visit coralspringscenterforthearts.com.
