Up Close with a Broadway Diva

Musical mistress Avery Sommers has pulled her Showboat into port in Fort Lauderdale. She is the featured singer for the Up Close and Personal Seasonal Concert Series, presented by the Museum of Art|Fort Lauderdale and Nova Southeastern University. Sommers is known for her award-winning Broadway career, with ties locally as president of A. Sommertime Production Co. in West Palm Beach. She has starred on Broadway in Ain’t Misbehavin’, and in Showboat as Queenie. She toured nationally playing Jewel in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with Ann-Margret and as Matron Mama Norton in Chicago. Sommers’ zealous portrayal of Mama won her the La Ovation Award for Best Actress. Musical merriment takes place Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Horvitz Auditorium at Museum of Art|Fort Lauderdale, 1 E.
