Though mostly unknown to international audiences, Skank is one of the most revered rock bands in their native Brazil, owing to their catchy songs and fiery shows. Lead vocalist (and main lyricist) Samuel Rosa is a charismatic frontman who is outspoken about his political beliefs and his passion for soccer - all of which are themes for some of their most successful songs, such as "E Uma Partida de Futebol" ("Soccer Game") and "Escravo" ("Slave").

Formed in 1991, Skank is heavily influenced by bands like UB40 and the Wailers (the band's name was taken from Bob Marley's "Easy Skanking"). But they are also inspired by Brazilian soul artists like Jorge Benjor and Tim Maia, who fused the American sounds of Sly Stone and George Clinton with the rhythmical patterns of samba. They are currently touring in support of their fifteenth release, Estandarte, released in late 2008.

The show kicks off at 11 p.m. at Club Cinema, at 3251 N. Federal Hwy. in Pompano Beach. Tickets cost $49 to $59. Call 305-342-3180, or visit skankusa.com.
