Expression through music is one of the oldest forms of art. Stories have been passed musically down through generations, all culminating in one of the best songwriters of all time: Bob Dylan. Dylan lived in a time when the great songwriters would meet in hip places in cities like Manhattan to revel in their artistry. Pompous? Maybe. But some of the best music came from his generation, which begs the question, do we need a bit more pomposity in our music today? Enter the Songwriters Showcase at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. Founder Chrystal Hartigan created this event to bring local, national, and international together to perform the songs they have found inspirational. There's even an open-mic session for those willing to brave the stage. The showcases take place the second Monday of every month, including this Monday. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located at 201 SW Fifth Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. There is a $10 cover payable at the door. Visit chrystalhartiganpresents.com, or call 954-462-0222.
Second Monday of every month, 7:30 p.m. Starts: March 11. Continues through Sept. 9, 2013
