There's a power to Earth, Wind, & Fire and it's a power that transcends the obvious comparison to the elements. I remember many years ago as a young man being confronted by a classmate who could've sworn her parents had been "making it" to "some damn Earth, Wind, & Fire album." That was some serious shit! As were the grooves and soulful vocals! If a lot of R&B nowadays sucks it's because the players haven't studied the EWF playbook more carefully. This 30-plus year powerhouse still features founding members Maurice (who's been fighting Parkinson's) and Verdine White, Philip Bailey, and Ralph Johnson as well as a diverse and large catalogue of music that has grown and adapted with pop tastes and technologies. You know all EWF's crazy Egyptian imagery's gonna give King Tut's exhibit a run for its money when this sexy beast reaches South Florida.

Earth, Wind, & Fire perform at 8 p.m. Friday, March 17, at Mizner Amphitheatre, 590 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. Tickets cost between $35 and $65. Call 561-966-3309.
