The Deep End

Remember the good ol' house party days, when you filled up a living room with 50 of your closest friends, broke out the booze, and played DJ for the night on your parents' turntable? Well, April French does. She's co-owner of local music shop Karma Records (868 E. Oakland Park Blvd., Oakland Park) and purveyor of a new monthly party looking to inject a little homegrown flair into the scene — Wet Dream. Held the last Friday of each month at the swanky Lush Lounge, it's the yin to the mega-rave's yang. Instead of hosting top-billed acts, Wet Dream gives up-and-coming local DJs a forum to show their goods in a friendly, communal atmosphere.

Each month features five different beatsmiths — selected through demo tapes submitted to Karma — spinning hourlong sets of breaks, drum 'n' bass, house, trance, and tribal. French thinks the night could be a springboard both for artists and the community. "People with a love for music get a chance to talk to other DJs and just hang out," French says. "You get drum 'n' bass guys talking to the house guys, house guys talking to breaks guys... it's really cool."

That it is, and the idea for Wet Dream spawned from Karma's in-house Sunday Vibe sessions, which open up the store's turntables to budding young wax-scratchers. This Friday's Wet Dream is the second in the series and, from the sounds of it, won't be the last. "At the last party, everyone stayed until closing time," French notes. Isn't that the measure of any great house party?

This month's Wet Dream takes place from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. Friday, July 28, at Lush Lounge, 3074 NE 33rd Ave., Fort Lauderdale. Admission is free. Call 954-564-4898.
