Learning and quietly fabricating, Jorges planted the seeds of Possibly Now! almost two years ago. Time and patience yield the best rewards, and they're evident here -- from the surreal opening teen-angst rocker of "Underwear" to the caramelized sucralose clap-along close of "Meant to Be." Jorges performs all vocals, guitars, bass, and effects on the record, with the assistance of Volumen's Fernando Sanchez on drums (and for gigs there's a full band). The explorations veer from Ennio Morricone territory with "Much Too Soon," to pop bliss with synth effects kept to a minimum. The title track is an excellent, frenzied, post-punk number of heartfelt desperation that momentarily betrays the starry-eyed happiness of the album; it's a welcome change of pace before "Stars are Exploding," a long, slow, brooding instrumental that clears the palate before the aforementioned upbeat closer. And a very satisfying taste it is, with no filler to tarnish it. Jorges, mission accomplished!
Jorges debuts Possibly Now! at 10 p.m. Thursday, August 25, with special guest Humbert at I/O, 30 NE 14th St., Miami. The show is free. Call 305-358-8007.
