Flashback to Now

How 'bout them '90s? How 'bout that angst, that grunge, that flannel? How 'bout Better Than Ezra, the New Orleans trio that snagged platinum in 1993 with its pop rock ditty "Good" and opened the door for chart-toppers like Third Eye Blind and Matchbox Twenty? The trio that turned grunge rock's frown upside down is currently on tour to support its newest effort, Before the Robots, a smart and sad 13-track collection equal parts '80s pop and arena rock. And though they've never recaptured the limelight like they did when Seattle was the center of the world, BTE hasn't lost its unabashed sense of fun, as evidenced by the live shows. "We're real musicians," singer/songwriter Kevin Griffin says without a hint of irony. And in 2005's musical vacuum, that's saying a lot. It's a new decade, kids, so feel free to enjoy the show. Just leave the flannel at home.

Better Than Ezra performs at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the Carefree Theater, 2000 S. Dixie Hwy., West Palm Beach. Tickets cost $27.50. Call 561-833-7305.
