Why can't every city be as cool as Wilton Manors? Tucked cozily into 1.9 square miles between two forks of the Middle River, the Island City (as it is known) has an intimate population of 13,000 or so, averages only one murder per year, and boasts progressive politics (openly gay politicians can get elected here). This year, it will be the first city on the East Coast to be completely rigged for wireless Internet access. And when the city holds a birthday celebration for itself, the partying isn't limited to sissy activities like jumping in a bounce house and eating cake with the mayor. No, no, no. Instead, the entire populace is invited to compete in down 'n' dirty canoe races. When the city celebrates its 57th birthday on Saturday, you're invited. Teams of 12 people are needed to participate in the race's six legs. Competitors should register by calling 954-390-2130, and be sure to show up at the boat ramp at Colohatchee Park and Boat Ramp (1975 NE 15th Ave., Wilton Manors) by 8 a.m. sharp to slice down the waterways and maneuver through the mangrove stands. And for those of you who wouldn't know what to do with a paddle even if Forrest Gump gave you a personal lesson -- don't worry. Afterward, there will be cake. -Deirdra Funcheon

Mother's Day is the same deal every year, right? Maybe you'll treat your special lady to a tasty brunch or a lovely piece of jewelry or a beautiful bouquet of flowers. And then there's the sappy greeting card. All nice gestures, but that stuff gets old after a while. Let's shake it up a bit. The Second Annual Mother's Day Duathlon takes place Sunday at Tradewinds Park (3600 W. Sample Rd., Coconut Creek). The maternal course setup calls for two miles of running, followed by a ten-mile bike ride, concluding with another two-mile run. The starting gun sounds at 7 am. Registration costs $32.
