Birds of a Feather

Frankly, it's hard to imagine a better bill than Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers paired with their special guests, the Black Crowes. They're both traditional rock bands initially inspired by retro references, Petty and pals offering homage to the Byrds while the Crowes mimic Free, the Faces, the Stones, and Skynyrd. Thirty years on, Gainesville's favorite sons, the Heartbreakers, have ventured far beyond their initial template and become standard-bearers themselves, as evidenced by a catalog filled with classics, the influence they've had on others, and the added prestige Petty inherited when he joined Dylan, Harrison, Orbison, and Lynne in that momentary supergroup, the Traveling Wilburys. On the other hand, Chris and Rich Robinsons' unshakable preoccupation with their early idols finds the Black Crowes still sounding like they never left the nest. No matter -- the combination of Petty's prowess and the Crowes' cool should provide for a perfect evening of rock 'n' roll revelry.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and special guests the Black Crowes perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at the Sound Advice Amphitheatre, 601-7 Sansbury's Way, West Palm Beach. Tickets cost $29 and $59. Call Ticketmaster at 954-523-3309 or 561-966-3309.
