Go ahead and argue, but MOFRO is hands down the best rock band to come out of Florida since Skynyrd. You can keep your whiney emo brats and poseurific rap-metal numbskulls -- Jacksonville natives J.J. Grey and Daryl Hance have them beat with an easy and true Deep South soul that informs everything they do. Grey's sunbaked vocals sing of fishing holes, surfing spots, and a way of life sadly -- and rapidly -- disappearing from the Sunshine State. On lap steel and six string, Hance alternates between low, mournful howls and raging storms, infusing the music with understated passion and precision. With a hard-driving, blues-drenched R&B/funk rhythm section and some greasy organ work, MOFRO makes a gritty, righteous noise that's undeniably Floridian and something music lovers of any stripe can appreciate.

MOFRO plays at 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, January 14 and 15, at the Bamboo Room, 25 S. "J" St., Lake Worth. Tickets cost $22. Call 561-585-2583.
