Blind Date: Last year the New Theatre scored an incredible coup when it commissioned Nilo Cruz's surprise Pulitzer winner Anna in the Tropics. This year lightning may have struck a second time as the New Theatre has delivered another masterpiece of a play. Mario Diament's stunning, brilliant world premiere tracks five seemingly unconnected people in Buenos Aires. Their series of conversations reveals a tapestry of love lost and found, romantic obsession, quantum physics, and wry humor that pops up at the most unexpected moments. Iago: The Caldwell Theatre's new offering proposes plenty of blood-pumping drama but fails to deliver on that promise. James McLure's backstage potboiler wants to be an intimate look at behind-the-scenes love, lust, and jealousy during a production of Shakespeare's Othello. It's also a fictional take on the tempestuous romantic relationship between Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier, and Leigh's adulterous affair with the young Peter Finch. Michael Hall's staging is elegant simplicity, but both the production and the play, for all the passionate talk and dynamic staging, are rather pallid. Through April 4.
