For those with funky hats and an insatiable taste for watermelon and weird music, an Old Fashioned Downtown Patriotic Explosion may be the perfect launch pad for your Independence Day celebration (no family required). From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., the streets of downtown Lake Worth will come to life as restaurants and street vendors serve food on the sidewalk and as the city’s finest musicians take to the stages and street corners. There will be feeding frenzies for the fair-style contests (do you have what it takes to scarf an entire watermelon faster than the others?); and children of all ages will dance with big smiles on their painted faces. It will be an Independence Day weekend bash that could happen only in Lake Worth.

Lake Worth is a city with an unmistakable flavor thanks to the presence of the L-Dub loving artistic population. Although other towns may have Boston Pops recordings and tired, oldies cover bands crackling out of the PA for their Fourth of July weekend celebrations, Lake Worth’s block party soundtrack will be provided by Black Weather Shaman, Everymen, and several other artists who have recently been putting Lake Worth on the map as a breeding ground for bizarre and innovative music. Go for the music; stay for the funky, patriotic hat contest and the Lake Worth Playhouse’s preview of its upcoming production of Rent. The event is free and will take place on Lake Avenue, K Street, and L Street in downtown Lake Worth. Call 561-623-7026.
