Every day, pets are euthanized 150 dogs at Miami Animal Services alone because no one takes them home from a shelter. But a local organization called Save a Death Row Dog, founded by activist Diane Peters and run by volunteers, gives dogs a second lease on life. Theyre rescued from shelters, rehabilitated at a ranch in Davie, and once again offered to prospective owners. Usually you need an appointment to visit, but Thursday, they bring the fundraiser, Yappy Hour, to Americas Backyard
. You get two free drinks, free food, and a chance to meet the dogs at the ranch and to introduce them to your own dog(s), whom youre free to bring along. All the revenue from admissions goes toward maintaining this vital backup way station for dogs.
Yappy Hour is from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Americas Backyard (100 W. Broward Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Admission costs $10. Visit myamericasbackyard.com. For more information on Save a Death Row Dog, call 954-626-0708, or visit saveadeathrowdog.org.
