Global Latin Dance-Off | New Times Broward-Palm Beach

Global Latin Dance-Off

Once a dance genre appreciated solely by the growing Latin community stateside and abroad, salsa has become a truly international sensation. Evidence of this is the fourth edition of the World Salsa Championship, which returns to South Florida this year after a one-year hiatus (and two installments in Vegas) due to the bad state of the economy. Competitors come from all over the world, including places as far away as Morocco, Germany, South Korea, and Japan.

According to the organizers’ web page, their mission is to educate folks about salsa, to create a long-term legacy for the genre, and to bring together culturally diverse participants who share a love of music and dancing. So far, it’s been a success — this time around, the dance-off will be televised on major TV networks in the United States and abroad. Competition starts Wednesday the 16 and runs until Saturday the 19 at the Sheraton Fort Lauderdale Airport & Cruise Port Hotel (1825 Griffin Rd., Dania). Today’s festivities start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30 per day, $40 on Saturday. Call 954-920-3500, or visit starwoodhotels.com.
