Paintings of sunsets are often a way to make a quick buck off out-of-state tourists looking to take a “piece of Florida” back home with them. Of course, there are plenty of artists who simply love Florida’s marine life and are mindful of the possibility that what they’re capturing on canvas won’t be the same in another couple of generations. That’s why Whole Foods Market Lifestyle Center in Fort Lauderdale, in conjunction with the Museum of Discovery & Science, has organized a juried art contest with sea turtle and ocean conservation as its theme. The final judging will take place at this Wednesday’s reception, with more than $1,000 in prizes awarded. So come show your support, and maybe Florida’s sea turtles will be around for your grandkids to paint.

The reception starts at 6 p.m. at Whole Foods Market (2000 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale). Call 954-565-5655.
Wed., Aug. 5, 6 p.m., 2009
