Psst. Yeah, you. Please stop rifling through your couch’s cushions for pocket change: there isn’t any, and the act of scavenging is rather unbecoming. Yes, I know — times are tough. The scary oil speculation monster has jacked up everything’s ticket price, and when you opened your most recent mortgage statement it actually mocked you. But still, scouring the nether regions of your furniture for stray nickels is an act reserved for college students and meth heads, so really, back away from the sofa.

If you need a little payday, you might try looking closer at the stuff you’ve amassed over the years. You’ve always been curious about the history of your thrift store finds and family hand-me-downs; you suspect some of them might be bona fide collector’s items. This weekend you can find out which of your wares are worth hocking when the most famous appraiser with two first names, Tim Luke of Cash in the Attic, comes to Lighthouse Center for the Arts (Gallery Square North, 373 Tequesta Dr., Tequesta). At tonight’s cocktail shindig and auction you can bid on quality one-on-one time with Mr. Luke and catch a behind-the-scenes look at “freaky finds” from the show. Come back on Saturday and have Mr. Luke appraise that old clock, bronze urn, and heirloom rubber chicken ($20 gets one item appraised, $50 gets you three). And remember this: Selling your family treasures on eBay is the mature way to handle financial devastation. Tickets to Friday’s cocktail party are $30 for non-Lighthouse members.
