What is it about the current crop of British musical imports? They’re all female, sassy, fresh, and irreverent, and so far, the most prominent two – that’d be Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen – seem to be squandering their massive talents for the kind of antics that guarantee tabloid attention. And then there’s Estelle, who stands out from the pack like Naomi Campbell did when supermodels first emerged. Dark, chic, and lovely, Estelle is a double-threat in the same vein as Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliott – she’s a singer who can rap. Or is she a rapper who can sing? Either way, the chick is fly, her tunes are catchy, memorable, and finally, after years of popularity across the pond, she’s making waves stateside with a little help from two famous friends.

Recently signed to John Legend’s label, Estelle’s latest album, Shine (which drops April 29), fairly glows with star power. Cameos by Kanye, and production by the likes of Mark Ronson, Will I. Am, Swizz Beats, and Cee-Lo should guarantee her some Billboard chart time. Tonight she’s meeting and impressing the locals at the Bailey’s Get Together starring Estelle, hosted by her homie John Legend.
