Where the Girls Are

Had Aquaman been born a woman, his comic book would have been much cooler. Aqua Girl’s enemies wouldn’t be pirates or other traditional foes, no! She would shake down major ocean polluting companies like Exxon and send them to an island where she, and the rest of the Justice League of America, would host a women’s sweat lodge-style retreat. Everyone (including the sea life) would wear sensible shoes and take turns sharing personal experiences about the evils of poising the planet. The corporate super villains would realize the errors of their ways. Many hugs would be exchanged. Then everyone would dine alfresco on homemade snacks and cocktails.

Tonight kicks off something even more fabulous: Aqua Girl — an extended weekend entirely designed by women, for women. Each year thousands of gals around fly in from around the country to reconnect with old friends, shake it out at dance parties galore, and basically enjoy a well-deserved lady-cation. The ’08 edition promises to be bigger, better, and dancier than any other Aqua Girl to date. Take a peak at the itinerary, you’ll find that it’s packed with life’s best stuff: fine dining outings, comedy nights, pool parties and sun worship. Tonight’s Dive in Movie event at the Surfcomber Resort (1717 Collins Ave., Miami Beach) is a chill start to an active week: At 8 p.m. guests section out places in the sand on Miami Beach with popcorn, blankets, and new friends while the Aqua crew projects the cult lesbian film D.E.B.S. on the big screen. Movie night is free, everything else requires tickets. Get ’em at www.aquagirl.org.
