Tate à tête

If you’re like us, you can spend days navigating the cavernous realm of pulp books, comics, plush toys, statues, kitsch, pop art, anime, cult flicks, and foreign snacks that is Tate’s Comics (4566 N. University Dr., Lauderhill). In fact, your accumulated time in the store probably does total days by now – Tate’s has been hocking hard-to-find wares since they opened back in 1993, after all. That makes Tate’s, like, one of your closest buds (or at least a second cousin). And as of this weekend, your friend Tate’s will officially turn 15. A celebration of epic proportions is in order!

And so it shall be! Tate’s is reaching deep within its recesses and dragging out all its most cherished oddities, rarities, and mysteries for a parking lot tent sale to rule all tent sales; call it an Olympic Sale! From 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, the giant tent located just outside the store will be bursting with discounted comics,

T-shirts, anime CDs and DVDs, toys and figures, and more. Fill a longbox with back issue Buffy comics for $35; get a great deal on that Venom statue you’ve been eying for months; finally complete your set of Studio Ghibli soundtracks, just three-for-$10. In addition to the tent, all back issue comics inside the store will be half-off, and everything else will get a 10% discount. To keep things interesting, Tate Ottati and crew will host field day Olympic events on Sunday including “arm wrestle Tate” and “longbox toss,” with winners bagging bigger discounts and prizes. Everyone’s invited to stay on till Sunday at 4 p.m., when Ottati will cut the cake on 15 years of success (we’re told it’s white cake with chocolate buttercream frosting, yum!).
