Dogs: Harbingers of Heat

We’re at the tail end of the dog days of summer – that sweltering August sun sapping every last bit of our will like a chunk of Floridian kryptonite – which, if you listen to mom, means we should be cooling off indoors and drinking plenty of life sustaining fluids (beer, anyone?). The City of Delray Beach, however, is taking the dog days a bit more literally this year – they’re banking on the cuteness of carefully coifed pups to take our mind off all the sweating at the Doggie Duds Fashion Stroll during Thursday night’s Art and Jazz on the Avenue. And this fashion show is destined to be one of legend. Dog owners are asked to primp their pooches to the theme of “Lookin’ Cool During the Dog Days of Summer” and trot them out to Old School Square (51 N. Swinton Ave., Delray Beach) to be judged by a panel including the publisher of Boca Dog Magazine. The categories? Best Tropical Duds (large/medium breeds), Best Tropical Fashion (small/toy – how adorable!), Most Creative South Florida Look, and Best Owner-Doggie Summer Dress-Alike (Dr. Evil and Mini Me or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? So many possibilities!). Entry is just $5, and the Cornel Museum will offer half-price admission to its “For the Love of Dogs” exhibit during the event (keep the real dogs outside, please).
