You’ve Got Hate Mail

Nostalgic folks like to moan about the lost art of letter writing. Simpler times, whimsy times, blah, blah. But let’s take a moment to discuss its more practical merits: the art of the strongly worded letter. Also known as hate mail, the strongly worded letter harks back to the days when bitter complainers took pride in how they presented their inane ramblings. In fact, the more you hated someone, the more you were likely to ensure they received the most meticulously crafted prose (and cursive!). It showed that, ironically, you really did care. Nowadays, with the ease of the one-handed keyboard stroke, it’s hard to know just how meaningful that hatred really is.

Sometimes, as is often the point, these letters of strongly worded sentiments screw up people’s lives. That’s more or less the plot of the Boca Raton Theater Guild’s upcoming comedic production of Hate Mail. Boy sends hate mail. Girl gets fired. Strongly worded letters are exchanged. But despite the odds, love blossoms. There’ll be three performances: Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. For ticket sales, call 561-948-2601. All performances will be held at the Willow Theater at Sugar Sand Park (301 S. Military Trail, Boca Raton).
Fri., Dec. 3, 8 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 4, 8 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 5, 2 p.m., 2010
