It can be said without sarcasm that the slider is a grand American culinary achievement and a rare symbol of moderation in the age of bacon sundaes and quadruple stacks. The compact car of beef, it packs the juice and deliciousness of a big burger without putting people at inordinate risk of heart attack; it perfectly straddles the line between appetizer and meal.

On Thursday, Fort Lauderdale’s best restaurants will lock spatulas in an epic cookout for the title of “SoFla Slider Master.” At “Sips and Sliders at Sunset” (cosponsored by New Times), their meat morsels will be mouth-tested and digested by a panel of experts that includes celebrity chefs and Mayor Jack Seiler. It’s all happening at YOLO, a trendy joint on Las Olas whose own meatball slider — a pornographic confection of tomato gravy, arugula, and herb ricotta — is in the running. Spectators will be treated to great food, drinks, and live music. Proceeds go to the Jack & Jill Children’s Center.

Sips and Sliders at Sunset happens on Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at YOLO (333 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale). Admission cost $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Call 954-523-1000, or visit yolorestaurant.com.
