The White Panda at Green Room, August 4

With Girl Talk and even acts like Super Mash Bros. now playing to festival crowds of thousands, mashup artists have firmly been accepted as artists in their own right. And among the next big sound-collage artists is Southern California duo the White Panda. In one of those very-'00s stories, group members Procrast (Tom Evans) and DJ Griffi (Dan Griffith) had already been doing their own mashup things in Chicago and L.A., respectively, before linking up in 2009 and unleashing new tracks that quickly topped internet charts.

The following barely legal album, 2010's Rematch, served to further raise the act's profile and score opening slots on tours for artists like Wale, Far East Movement, and Mac Miller. As those tourmates might suggest, the White Panda isn't exactly aiming for too-cool hipsters here. Rather, its own cut-and-paste works are unabashedly pop — Lil Wayne over Swedish House Mafia, for instance — overlaying instantly recognizable tracks in new ways with the seemingly admirable goal of making girls dance.
