Respectable Is 24

Happy 24th birthday to the dark, rugged old music venue, Respectable Street! It alone collects a wonderful crowd -- goths, gays, scenesters, grinders, old men, kids who just want to play their music, bringing in both Robert Smith-wannabees and desirable Robert Smiths. (If you're going to this event, you should know who that is.) And, every year, for its free anniversary block party, all these walks of life fill Clematis Street alongside a new crowd: families and people who like free block parties and don't care much for indie rock, just plain people. Kids and adults alike will wear such carnival pleasures as neon lights in the form of Viking helmets, necklaces, mouthpieces (those teeth never looked so white), and sunglasses. Every year -- depending on how old Respectable is -- that is the number of bands that play. So, yeah, this year there's a full, incredible lineup of 24 bands. Here are a few: Missing Persons (headliner), John Ralston (such gentlemen), Guy Harvey, Nothing Rhymes With Orange, the Band in Heaven (they do a mean cover of the Silence of the Lambs song), Dick Knuckle (exciting! It's been forever since we've seen them), the Dewars (talent squared), and (beautiful) Lavola. All that for f-r-e-e. And, to boot, there will be open bar from 8 to 10 p.m. and complimentary pizza.

The "24th Anniversary Block Party Extravaganza!" starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, in the 500 block of Clematis Street, West Palm Beach. Call 561-832-9999, or visit
