South Florida has an active indie art scene. Born out of the rabid success of the annual Stitch Rock fair in Delray Beach, a new indie craft show seems to pop up every other weekend. The idea of buying locally and supporting local small-business people in these tough economic times is part of the appeal, but more than that, todays crafties just make knitting, gluing, weaving, and sewing seem so freakin cool. Art: Sunny Side Up takes giving back to the local community one step further. The inaugural fair, which takes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hilton Deerfield (100 Fairway Drive, Deerfield Beach), will support more than the local indie crafters. The event admission, $3 for one ticket, $5 for two tickets (children under 12 free if accompanied by an adult), will go to the Lighthouse Christian Academy of Broward (lcaofbroward.com). Your dollars will help pay for the academys ongoing construction as well as a new fire sprinkler system. And all you have to do to help is enjoy the live music, makes and takes, face painting, and raffles in addition to the 85 vendors hawking their handmade wares. The first 100 guests to arrive will receive a free swag bag. Visit artsunnysideup.blogspot.com.
