Fort Lauderdale might be best-recognized for its former glory as a spring-break haven. While we still get our fare share of drunken college students, the city and its residents have graduated to a slightly higher level of sophistication. We've left behind the funnels of Natty Light for grown-up craft beer. Quite frankly: We couldn't be more proud of ourselves. To honor and celebrate local homebrewers -- and the history of our dear city -- the Riverside Market is hosting a home brew competition on Saturday. Starting at 7 p.m., the market is bringing together beer lovers, beer brewers, and anyone looking for some good old spring-break fun for its '80s- and spring-break-themed homebrew competition. A panel of local beer experts -- Riverside owners Julian and Lisa Siegel, New Times beer columnist Doug Fairall, Harpoon Brewery's Lauren Bowen, and Funky Buddha owner and head brewer Ryan Sentz -- will judge the submitted beers for each category, including IPA, Double IPA, Stout, Pale, Amber, Belgian, Tutti Fruity, Brown, Malt Beverage, Porter, Lager, People's Choice, and Judge's Choice. The team with the most authentic spring-break getups will receive bonus points. The cost to attend is $10, which includes samples of all the submitted beers (probably around 20). Riverside Market is located at 608 SW 12th Ave. in Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-358-8333, or visit facebook.com/riversidemarket.
