The Indie Spring

About five years ago, the local indie craft scene blew up in South Florida. The craft world's equivalent of punk rock -- populated largely by edgy grrls with neck tattoos and Rosie the Riveter-era hairstyles -- has created a craft scene that would have shocked the grandmas of yesterday's craft scene down to their toes. (OK, that's a bit of a stereotype, but it paints a nice picture, and honestly, the neck tattoos are truly works of art unto themselves.) Suddenly, indie craft fairs were everywhere, every weekend, each one claiming to be bigger and more awesome than the last. This was, of course, impossible and created a bit of a craft fair bubble. Instead of bursting, the indie artists and vintage vendors, as well as their avidly devoted clientele, found their equilibrium and created a thriving scene -- not too big, not too small -- but just right and all awesome. The Indie Craft Bazaar is one of the events that has stood the test of time and continues to pop up in the schedule a few times a year. The spring incarnation, dubbed "Spring Creative," takes place at Revolution Live from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. There will be more than 65 vendors hawking their arts, crafts, original fashion designs, vintage goods, specialty foods, and other handmade items. If you are into supporting the arts or local businesses, you can do both here. You can also have your tarot cards read, make your own DIY kitchen herb garden, sip $3 mimosas, and win a free raffle.
