Oh boy, the NFL certainly keeps getting itself into more and more trouble these days with bullying scandals and domestic disputes. Sure, that kind of negativity will get all the headlines, but it is nice to see some positive news have some peripheral attachment to the league. Take, for example, local boy done good Twan Russell, a former UM alum and Dolphins' linebacker who might not have had the most stellar of careers on pro field but has certainly been an image and beacon of hope to our communities since retiring. The Fort Lauderdale native's foundation Laugh for Literacy has been active with local youth and has a hands-on approach with its "opening books to open doors" motto. Kind of makes you wish more of his colleagues took to some philanthropic angle. Presented by the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, this event will take place Friday at the Hollywood Dave & Buster's and will feature the comedic stylings of Sarge, "the only black Jew who hasn't made it in show biz." His irreverent comedy, filled with music and self-deprecation, has made him a darling of Betty Ford Clinic fundraisers. Expect the same for literacy.
A VIP cocktail reception starts at 6 p.m., with the main-event doors opening at 7:30 at Dave & Buster's Hollywood, 3000 Oakwood Blvd., Hollywood. Advance tickets cost $40; VIP tickets cost $75. Call 954-921-3787, or visit russellreadingroom.com.
