Story to Song

Gloria Steinem. Joan Rivers. Gwyneth Paltrow. Norman Lear. What do these incredibly accomplished and wickedly talented people have in common? If you feel a knee-jerk cue for some acoustic strumming and a young Adam Sandler sing-along coming on, you’d be on point. But Sandler isn’t the only one singing gifted Jewish celebrity shout-outs where they’re due. In 2005, when Yale graduate and former PBS producer Abigail Pogrebin wanted to learn more about her own identity, she delved into the rich and deep history of Jewish celebrity life in her book Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish. The 2005 bestseller was a natural fit for the stage and has since been turned into a humorous and memorable musical, Stars of David: Story to Song. Featuring original songs by some of Broadway’s finest (including Gaby Alter, Michael Feinstein, and Lisa Lambert), the play arrives Thursday at the Amaturo Theater at Broward Center (201 SW Fifth Ave., Fort Lauderdale), where, with few things open Christmas Day, it’s a best bet. Tickets cost $45 to $53.10. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Call 954-462-0222, or visit
