Has “the zombie thing” finally reached vampire proportions? Or after decades of Anne Rice-fueled goth shenanigans, are zombies still cool enough to last a little longer in pop culture’s graces? One thing for sure is that running events seem to be occurring with more and more frequency, and the cooler ones usually have a pretty good gimmick. In this Walking Dead era, what could be cooler than running a 5K through a gauntlet of zombified volunteers? (Well, besides making it to the finish line without becoming one, of course.) The 5KRunDead runs feature a zombie-infested course that tests runners’ speed, endurance, and strength while they undergo zombie attacks. Pretty cool! And what’s even cooler is that runners will use a flag system denoting their “health” status — losing all flags will cancel prize chances. “Zombie” participants will be made up by professional makeup artists! One hundred percent of proceeds benefit Alzheimer’s disease research, which is cool, since Alzheimer’s is an unfortunate neurodegenerative, almost zombie-like disease that afflicts many. The fun starts at 4 p.m. Saturday at Snyder Park, Snyder Park Road, Fort Lauderdale. Call 954-828-4585, or visit 5krundead.com for registration and event information and promo codes.
