Food nerds and locavores, rejoice. Thousand Pound Egg, a specialty food store in Victoria Park, is hosting a complimentary open house/street party Saturday evening to introduce local gourmands to the blossoming business district on NE 20th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale. The gathering also will give shoppers a chance to mingle with a handful of hyperlocal food producers, thereby eliminating the need to get all Portlandia "Is it local?" about things.

Expected to attend are the faces behind Florida-made products like Ethical Bounty (raw organic nut butters), Kana Cuban Coffee Roasters (coffee beans that are roasted locally and available by the whole bean or ground), Laurie's Pantry (gourmet granolas), Pascale's (artisanal jams and sauces), Pop Nature (fancy ice pops), and Tiki Island Products (fresh hot sauces made by the batch). They'll be providing tastings of their signature products for open house attendees.
The bash started out as a way to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Red Pearl Yoga, located next door to Thousand Pound Egg. Karen Gavrilov -- who owns both businesses -- decided to expand the idea to encompass the neighborhood. Eat the Tea, a recently-opened tea store and cafe, will stay open late for the event, as will clothing boutique Haute & Swagger, lifestyle store Tree of India, and several others.
"This whole street is starting to pop," Gavrilov said of the recent growth in the area. "There's a new energy."
The festivities -- which include music and art -- are 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday. There's no cost to attend.
