This past week, Food Network's Worst Cooks in America was searching for truly horrible cooks at a Miami open casting call. While there, Clean Plate Charlie encountered people who set fire to their houses, made their dogs sick, and glued food to the plate so it wouldn't slide around (really!).
The OMG! Cookbook is for the likes of these people. Oh My Gosh! I'm in College and I Never Learned to Cook (that's the full title) was written by Hollis Ledbetter, a grandmother in Alpharetta, Georgia, who apparently had visions of seeing her grandchildren go hungry at the dorm.
Ledbetter wrote a book so dumbed down that both college students and the truly ungifted in the kitchen will be able to make something edible.
The book starts with a shopping list of basics to have on hand, like soy sauce, pepper, garlic powder, and canned tomatoes, then goes on to demonstrate some pretty easy recipes.
OMG! features easy recipes that are healthy, like home-made granola,
lettuce wraps, and pumpkin soup, as well as favorites like quesadilla
and ramen noodles.
OMG! isn't going to get you a stint on Top Chef, but make a recipe from
this book and you just might be able to make something edible. OMG! is
available at Amazon.com for $22.99.
Here's a recipe for toast from the book:
Toast Boast
Ingredients:
Sliced wheat bread
With each piece of wheat bread use:
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Directions:
Combine butter, sugar, and cinnamon and cook in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir until combined and butter is melted. Spread mixture on bread; place in broiler. Stay with it because it will broil very quickly. When the cinnamon and sugar bubble, it is done. You can make as many pieces as you want. This is delicious with hot cocoa.
