If you haven't wandered past the mesmerizing glow of jellyfish gracing the entrance of Steak 954 because you're put off by the $48 price tag for a rib eye, you can now sample some of chef Stephen Starr's creations for a whole lot less.
The flagship restaurant at the trendy W Hotel recently launched a sunset menu featuring relatively affordable bar bites and sunset-themed cocktails, including
the paradoxically named Sunrise made with rum, passion fruit, pineapple,
and sage. Other inspired drinks include the Laguna with rum, lemongrass
sake, coconut milk, and pineapple juice, as well as the Cortez, mixed
with riesling, acai, and kiwi. Thirsty yet?
Sample a few of the delectable snacks and find out why our restaurant
critic swooned after tasting the dry-aged sliders with aged cheddar
cheese, recounting, "A slider is not just a slider: It's Kobe beef
topped with the sweetest caramelized onions and sandwiched between
rounds of buttery brioche."
There are also big-eye tuna tacos
with avocado salad and chipotle aioli ($10 and pictured above), salt cod
fritters with a citrus aioli ($10), a mini-BLT ($9), and a smoked trout
salad ($9). A raw bar offers East and West Coast oysters with a yuzu
cocktail sauce ($15), a local snapper tiradito ($12), and lobster and
crab coconut ceviche with jalapeño ($14). The new sunset menu runs daily
from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., a time when the restaurant was previously
closed. Steak 954 also serves lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch.
