Mötley Crüe: The Most Scandalous Band in Rock History

The most remarkable thing about Mötley Crüe's farewell tour is that it's taking place in 2014 and all four members -- singer Vince Neil, guitarist Mick Mars, bassist Nikki Sixx, and drummer Tommy Lee -- are participating. None of them is in jail, in drug-induced comas, or dead -- or at least, not still dead. (More on that later.) In the L.A. rock band's 33-year history, the Crüe has been involved in scandals so insane that if they happened now, TMZ's servers would crash and Perez Hilton's head would explode.

Let's take a stroll down memory lane, one that looks a bit like Sunset Strip, to uncover why Mötley Crüe is the most scandalous rock band of all time.

5. Vince Neil's Car Crash

In 1984, after days of heavy partying, Neil decided to get into his Pantera sports car and head to the local liquor store. On the drive home, he was speeding and lost control of the car, crashing into another vehicle head-on. The collision seriously injured those in the other car and killed Neil's passenger, Hanoi Rocks drummer Nicholas Dingley, AKA Razzle.

Neil, remarkably, was unhurt but was charged with vehicular manslaughter and DUI. He was fined $2 million but had to serve only 18 days in jail. In a classy move, Mötley Crüe dedicated its next album, Theatre of Pain, to Dingley. In a less classy move, it named its 2003 box set Music to Crash Your Car To.

4. Tommy Lee's Sex Tape

If you want to blame someone for Paris Hilton's and Kim Kardashian's fame, you might point a finger at Tommy Lee. As those two celebutantes discovered, thanks to Lee, the quickest path to the spotlight is an illicitly released sex tape. Back in 1995, Lee discovered that footage of his sexcapade with then-wife Pamela Anderson was stolen and released on the internet, becoming one of the most heavily watched videos of all time.

3. Nikki Sixx Dies

Though there have been plenty of rock stars whom many believe faked their own deaths, only one definitely came back from the grave. That would be the Crüe's Nikki Sixx. On the band's 1987 tour with Guns N' Roses, Sixx overdosed on heroin in Slash's hotel room. When the ambulance came, Sixx was declared legally dead by the paramedics before being revived by CPR. To celebrate his resurrection, Sixx wrote the song "Kickstart My Heart."

2. Egging on Ozzy

While on tour with Ozzy Osbourne, the Crüe dangerously enabled Ozzy's wild side. In a hotel in Lakeland, Florida, while wearing a summer dress he stole from an elderly woman, Ozzy pissed on the ground, then got down and licked it up like a dog at a water bowl. Ozzy then dared Nikki Sixx to do the same. Sixx peed on the pavement, but before he had a chance to fulfill the second part of the equation, Ozzy got down and did it himself. Later that night, Ozzy was desperate for cocaine. Since no one in his or Mötley Crüe's entourage had any, Ozzy picked up a straw and snorted a line of ants crawling on the ground up his nose. Some of the insects managed to survive and crawled out of his mouth.

1. Bizarre Lawsuit

In 1988, Matthew Trippe claimed he was due a share of the Crüe's royalties for the previous five years. His reasoning was that in 1983, Sixx was hospitalized from a car crash and Trippe was hired to be Nikki Sixx for the next five years, during which time he wrote hits like "Girls Girls Girls" and "Wild Side." Whether Tripp claimed to have been the one who overdosed in Slash's hotel room was unclear, as he dropped the suit in 1993 and disappeared from public view.
