West Palm's indie-rock lovelies Surfer Blood,
who need little introduction in these pages, are back from their
European vacation. They've packed two fabulous bands in their suitcases
that should make showing up early to the Poplife Anniversary party even
easier.
First, New York's the Pains of Being Pure at heart are one of the few acts that can convincingly meld the pop songcraft of the Smiths and the live thrash of My Bloody Valentine.
A recently released new single titled "Say No to Love" is a mature,
sweet anthem that also has some bitchin', pogo-worthy fills by drummer Kurt Feldman.
Also along is Hooray for Earth, another New York act that has no shortage of longing in the vocals -- the mesmerizing "Surrounded by Your Friends" is a great example of making synthesizers warm and wildly human.
Surfer Blood, with the Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Hooray for Earth at the Poplife Anniversary party, 11 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Grand Central, 697 N. Miami Ave., Miami. Tickets cost $15 in advance from wantickets.com; age 18 and up. Call 305-377-2277, or click here.
